We have had several mothers who had repeated bouts of mastitis. We now do a milk culture on anyone who is starting her third in a row and have found some unusual bacteria that were not covered by the usual antibiotics. Eileen

And it's almost always going to be bacterial, not fungal. Basically, the mom has to go on a long course of antibiotics: six weeks. IMO, she also needs to take lots of probiotics as well, 100 billion organsisms/day at times offset with the antibiotics, or she will end up with a fungal infection. I just went looking through my handouts and couldn't find the study. I think I have to search online for it. It's good for the moms to have something in hand to give to their doctors. I think the other point made was that you want to culture the milk so the antibiotic can be specific to that organism.
