*Recruiting External Observers for Study in California *

*Using the Dimension of Success (DoS) Tool*

The Program in Education, Afterschool, and Resiliency (PEAR) at Harvard 
University and McLean Hospital (Gil Noam, Co-PI) along with the School 
of Education at UC Irvine (Deborah Vandell, Co-PI) will conduct a study 
to investigate differences in how internal observers (those that work 
for particular afterschool programs) and external observers (those that 
are not associated with those programs) rate the quality of STEM 
learning experiences for youth in a range of afterschool programming in 
Northern and Southern California.

We are interested in hiring 4-6 external observers that would be able to 
travel in Northern California and conduct between 10-15 observations each.

Commitment of External Evaluator:

·Attend a paid two-day online webinar training to learn how to use the 
Dimensions of Success (DoS) observation tool for assessing STEM program 
quality in afterschool (late-August).

·Complete video calibration exercises

·Attend one-hour calibration call

·Complete two practice field observations to establish rater-reliability

·Complete 10-15 observations in Northern California region from 
September-December 2013  (locations will be selected for each hired 
evaluator that are within 2 hours driving distance)

Each observation involves:

·Arriving 15 minutes early to meet facilitator, take background notes, 
and find a good spot to observe

·Taking notes on laptop during live enactment of STEM activity (usually 
30 minutes-1 hour)

·Using rubric to rate each of the12 DoS dimensions and provide evidence 
for ratings (based on field-notes). /This step takes about 30 minutes./

·Upload ratings to online database. /This step takes about 10 minutes./



Compensation:

·External observers will receive $250 per observation.
