Barbara asks:
My group moms often ask about Vit D so I researched brands for contents.
Wondering why baby needs D so early? Why contaminate the infant gut so
early with anything other than breastmillk?>>
Because moms are deficient in Vit D. Fabulous article in Dec issue of
Midwifery and Women's Health (???). A study at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit
from 1/1/2008 thru 12/31/2009, measuring the Vit D levels of pregnant
women, spanning all cultures & ethnicities, summer/fall/winter/spring -- over
2800 women. Median Vit D level was 14 ng/mL. Only 7.5% had Vit D levels
that were 30 ng/mL or higher. That's absolutely appalling. And what is
worse is that ACOG has ruled that there is "insufficient evidence" to show that
pregnant women should routinely be tested for Vit D levels (2011), and
that what they get in their prenats is sufficient. 400 IU? Recommendation
(Bruce Hollis? Carol??? (I'm in a garage somewhere and can't access my files)
recommend 6400 IU daily for pregnant and lactating women which would give
them enough in their breastmilk.
Don't forget the 2009 study by Anne Merewood in which women who had Vit D
levels of 50 ng/mL or higher had a C/Section rate of about 5% -- same as it
was in 1970.
Jan Barger -- who takes 5000 IU/day cuz I live in the north, am old and
chubby. And whose last level was 62 ng/mL.
