Prolactin is hormone that drives milk synthesis

Prolactin levels at birth are in range: 200-400 ng/mL

After birth, levels fall almost 50% the first week
to 100-200 ng/mL

Gradually decline over period of months to approximately 80 ng/mL at
6 months
