From what I can tell from my WIC moms is that pumping is being viewed as a
breastfeeding "necessity" even for stay-at-moms due to many of the
"barriers" eluded to in previous posts (not wanting to breastfeed in public
is a common reason stated by mom on why they pump and/or pressure from
mother-in-laws and husbands that want to feed baby). And the "free
insurance pump" imho is not helping to deter woman from pumping when there
is not truly a need.

There are also gems like the following quote, which I saw on a facebook
mom-to-mom support page. And this was posted as being information from an
genuine IBCLC!
"I get asked several times a day how to quickly build a milk supply...

Power pumping

when you are trying to up your supply especially your pumping supply it's
great if you can pump for ten minutes, rest for ten minutes, on and off,
for a total of one hour. When your dear Lo's are in bed asleep it is best
so you can concentrate better on the times. do this if you can 2-3 times a
day along with taking Fenugreek three caps three times a day. with what is
going to feel like a literal TON of water. with in three days your going to
wonder who's boobs your are wearing!! LOL then go ahead with your normal
pumping schedule. To keep up with your growing Lo I recommend doing this
every three weeks."
I do share power pumping information with my moms if they are truly unable
to provide enough milk for baby due to separation during work/school. But I
also first talk about appropriate feeding sizes/paced bottle feeding etc,
because I most often find that mom is able to pump plenty of milk, but that
baby is being overfed by the caregiver. I personally would never recommend
power pumping every couple of weeks to "keep up with your growing LO."
