It just dawned on me that we seldom discuss the possibility of zinc deficiency when it comes to diaper rash. Zinc deficiency can cause very bad diaper rash. Zinc is very hard to find in foods other than red meat or oysters. Zinc is also right along side with iron as being the nutrients that most infants do start needing in addition to breast milk AROUND 6 months when solids are started. Since the first thing that is often investigated is allergy and since I don't ever recall anyone discussing the possibility of zinc deficiency -- is this one of those hidden nutrient deficiencies that may even be exacerbated by chasing the tail of allergies and removing foods from mother's diets. If this mother has an eating disorder is she offering this baby enough foods rich in zinc to maintain an adequate immune system? Zinc is very important in immunity AND appetite.
Best, Susan Burger
