Germaine Lambergs asked on 14 April whether anyone else had found an off
odor in thawed, previously frozen breast milk the day after a powdered
protein was added to the milk.
Germaine, from your post it seems that this happened in hospital, where a
technician was preparing feeds at least 12 hours in advance. This alone
would concern me, since we have been taught to treat any milk mixture not
consisting of pure, non-heat treated breastmilk, as we treat any artificial
baby milk, which means making up each feed immediately before use and never
more than a very few hours in advance. I share Maureen Minchin's concern
about the advisability of the practice.
If the frozen milk was pasteurized before freezing (in Norway we don't
pasteurize donor milk but i gather most places do) then the thawed milk
even with no foreign ingredients added will go off, just the way ABM does.
Fresh frozen human milk does not do this because many of the antibacterial
properties in it are unchanged by freezing and thawing.
I am guessing that 'beneprotein' is a brand name for a kind of human milk
fortifier to increase protein content for extremely premature babies. That
makes it absolutely imperative that the routines used in preparing feeds
are safe, and supported by research based evidence.
Perhaps this incident can lead to a change in the imstitution in question ,
and if it is a country-wide practice, it could really make a difference.
Good luck, and do let us know how it goes.
