Our community has a large refugee population from at least 8 different countries. The medical needs of these people are being met in primarily one clinic and one or two hospitals. Many of the women no longer have their support systems intact, having left behind their mothers, grandmothers or sisters, who would have helped them breastfed. We have found that even though we may have printed materials in the native language, the patient can't read it. The education in this clinic is a huge challenge with differing languages and low literacy. Very private and not wanting to complain, women do not bring their concerns forward until there is a big problem. Is anyone aware of breastfeeding instruction that comes as a pictorial or even in a simple DVD? It would also need to have a section on troubleshooting, as a way to alert a woman to come into the clinic when a problem arises, such as mastitis. Thanks.
