I was asked if there was a questionnaire we could use to assess
breastfeeding knowledge from our Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health staff
- they talk to mothers prenatally and some are nurses that make home visits
but most are health workers who make home visits or answer calls about a
variety of subjects (communicable disease, TB, lead poisoning, pregnancy
access to care, etc.).
I have permission to use the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale - a totally
unexpected quick and pleasant turn-around (and e-mail dialogue) with Arlene
de la Mora, Ph.D., Research Scientist, Psychology in Education Research Lab,
Iowa State University in Ames, where our sons went to school.
However, I would like to know if there has been anything already developed
for basic information that staff who has contact with women of child-bearing
age should know. I'm trying to NOT be IBCLC-like - but rather what should
they know in order to encourage breastfeeding - and coming to us if concerns
are raised.
Topics such as:
- Breastfeeding is the normal way to feed a baby
- Babies can lead the way if you let them
- Early prenatal care and get concerns answered during pregnancy
- Importance of planning prenatally for childbirth
- Expect to have your baby on your chest right after delivery (one
mom in a Peer Counselor class was SO upset no one explained to her the
importance of this, so when the nurse tried to put the baby on her chest -
she told her to "wash him up first".)
- Babies don't "sleep like a baby"
- Clocks are useless
.you know.
Anything like this out there?
