We had a bit of a shock when my second child, who had been weighed by the
midwife at 9lb1oz at birth, was about 7.5lbs at her five day checkup (about
17% loss).  She was born at home with no interventions, nursed effectively
within 30 min of birth, and my milk came in barely 24hrs postpartum.  The
backup doctor had manually estimated her weight at 7.5 lbs when I was at my
last prenatal with him, and we concluded that he had been correct and the
midwife must have just read the scale wrong.

She is, incidentally, "celiac" genetically, but has only been exposed
accidentally once or twice, so there seem to be no health issues.

Sometimes a mistake is just a mistake, and anybody who recommends weaning
before figuring out what's going on, gets a big hairy eyeball from me!
