I just happened upon a 1959 article written by a (then) well known British Obstetrician Dr. Hytten (who also wrote elsewhere on his measuring of nipple size with calipers). This was back when LLL was just getting started spreading over the U.S. and my own city finally had an established group (without whose telephone counseling my life would have been so very, very different to this day. See the vignette preceding Chapter 7 of the most recent WABF.)
The reasons for the drop in breastfeeding rates in the succeeding decades "way back when" were certainly multiple. It was an interesting excursion back to the times when so much less was known (by everyone, even the most interested) about breastfeeding.
