I, and two other IBCLCs work in a facility and for a Health Care Authority that has disallowed conversation about safe co-sleeping, both in hospital and within the community health setting. These changes came about after national guidelines changed.
As a mother who co-slept with both my BF children it is very challenging when the discussion arises with exhausted mothers who are getting up to BF several times per night. I have discussed safe sleeping, at risk of reprimand, as these mothers are looking for options to improve nighttime sleep - often seeking advice regarding nighttime supplements so baby will sleep longer.
Any advice on how to handle this situation?
We used to have some fantastic policies and guidelines regarding co sleeping for breastfeeding mothers but they were pulled a few years ago in the face of national and provincial guidelines.
