Mary, I'm a skeptic and it seems unlikely. My thought is this, what
mechanism could there be? I would want to see sound evidence before
accepting an intervention such as this. Those on Lactnet with knowledge of
doses of herbals may want to comment on the dose.
That said, it is always good to know what individual health professionals
are recommending, so that we are aware what mothers are being advised and
can discuss it here.
The problem behind this, as I see it, is that a taking something by mouth is
offered as a fix, when the focus should be on checking if a mother has real
low supply or perceived low supply. Then, if the supply really is low, she
needs appropriate guidance on breastfeeding more frequently, attending to
latch, and other issues according to that dyad's needs. Even better would be
referral to an IBCLC or LLL for more in-depth support.

Subject: Evening primrose oil
An OB recommended evening primrose oil, 1300mg, twice daily for low milk
supply. I'll admit to never having heard of that before. Does it work? If
so, how?
