Thank you for reponding, Lee-Ann. It seems the mothers you are seeing are
continuing with some breastfeeding and giving totally inappropriate
probiotics as well, and not switching completely. You are giving them good
advice! I hope they heed it.
I'm not researching this, but I hope my comments will spur someone else to
research whether parents are taking their babie soff breastfeeding in the
belief that these products are better. (I have other research that is
keeping me busy, which is why I can't take on any new projects.)
Best wishes,
Virginia

Subject: Pre/probiotics in formula
Thank you for posting that radio program Virginia.
You asked if we knew of mothers switching to formula for these reasons. I'm
not aware of anything like that here, though it wouldn't surprise me. I am
noticing that most babies I'm coming in contact with are being directly
supplemented with probiotics (usually biogia) without much reasoning. I find
these moms bring complaints of gas pains in baby and I wonder if the
probiotics aren't causing this. If the moms are concerned about babies
probiotic load I advise them to supplement themselves and pass it on in the
breastmilk. I have heard of wiping poop on babies face but I haven't spoken
to moms about that.
I would love to see more research on the use of these supplements in
breastfed infants.
