Please also review what is commonly known about HIV in general before this mother totally freaks out.  HIV does not live very long outside of the body, so even a used needle lying on the floor is not a good environment for a virus that is pretty delicate outside the right conditions:

Disposable acupuncture needles are not hollow - the part used to penetrate the skin is stiff wire of varying degrees of thickness.  Thus any virus that may have found itself onto the needle is exposed, rather than protected inside something like a hypodermic needle where it will stay warm and moist longer than it would on a surface.  Most references to needle sticks imply the use of a hypodermic/hollow needle - if it's helpful to use a risk-assessment tool like Laurie suggested, the acupuncture needle would be closest in type to a suture needle rather than any of the hollow needles listed.  

Interrupting nursing and/or starting an anti-retroviral regimen both have pretty serious health implications - analyzing the low likelihood of transmission with as many facts as possible seems really important.
