Dear Lactnet Friends:

Chinese medical practices have worked for over 5, 000 years. All medical
systems carry beliefs with them that make no sense to other medical
systems. An example includes keeping a postpartum mother warm, very very
warm, to counteract the cold state she is in after she gives birth. We
pooh-pooh that in the US, and in China, mothers are kept under 12 blankets.

Staff members, who are but a walk-on in a mother's movie, are not going to
have any impact on changing her beliefs. Best is to negotiate; encourage
skin to skin and let the family see the baby self-attach while the rest of
the mother is covered with 12 blankets. Honor the past, i.e. "doctors used
to teach THAT (ancient practice) and now doctors have learned from research
that THIS works best." This is new information, and was new to us too.

I wonder what SIDS rates have been in China, because in the US, mothers are
taught to avoid overheating babies. Anyone know?

warmly,
