Dear Lactnet Friends:

I've been following this IGT thread with interest. There is an amazing
range of breasts, aren't there. Some look fine and don't make milk; some
don't look fine and make milk. No way to predict.

As every mother is at risk for premature weaning and reduced supply in the
era of industrialized birth, all mothers need the same things.

1) birth skin-to-skin with newborn
2) unrestricted access between baby and mamma's breast with many, many (12
or more) breastfeeds in the first few days
3) loving and adequate follow-up....an infant weight check at 2 or 3 days
after hospital discharge along with a maternal assessment of comfort.

When every mother receives this level of care, problems will be identified
quickly.

As for some mothers wishing they had known ahead of time about possible
challenges to milk supply, remember that hindsight is always 20/20. So
many couples returning for a reunion after childbirth classes wanted to
know why I hadn't covered more about postpartum in childbirth class. They
had forgotten that their main, if not only, concern in class was about
labor and delivery.

warmly,
