I have to agree with Pat. Hand expression is a useful skill for all mothers to have. It is much easier to get really excited about precious drops of colostrum on a spoon.
Sometimes, especially with the first expression soon after birth, a cup may be needed rather than a teaspoon - but I always start with a small teaspoon :) If it is necessary to continue expressing on the second day, then the mother already knows how to hand express and can combine this comfortable with pumping for a greater yield.
