Jet ventilators and Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are two extremely
expensive therapeutic technologies for a premature infant. It makes no
sense whatsoever to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for them, and
then give the premature infant non-human milk because its cost is low.
When will insurance companies realize that preventing NEC is worth the
comparatively low cost of donor milk? Diane Spatz PhD told us at a full-day
conference that one case of surgical NEC costs $1 million.
