Three cheers to Laura for "doing the right thing" and looking for  the
copyright owner of an image, to seek permission to use the image in a
presentation she ins preparing.

I am thick in the middle of doing research on this topic as I prepare a
presentation myself on copyright issues.

Here is a great website to bookmark:  http://tineye.com/.  You can upload
an image, or insert its URL, and it will tell you all the places that image
appears on the Internet.

**NO** it is not telling you who the copyright holder is ... it is telling
you where this image appears -- so at least you can focus your efforts on
whom to make inquiries of.

If you find yourself doing this sort of detective work, *keep track of and
save* every single e-mail, and response, you generate.  It will provide a
plausible defense of your due-diligence efforts, if you never *do* find the
original owner, and use the image anyway ... and then the owner finds YOU
and sues you for copyright violation.

Before anyone starts throwing the phrases "fair use" or "fair dealing"
around, please note that those are **merely defenses** to a **knowing
violation** of copyright law.

Copyright law is amazingly uniform around the world.  If you want to know
more about copyright law, the U.S. and U.K. government websites for
registering works are extremely user-friendly.
