I have never, ever, told a mom, or even thought in a client's general
direction, "Just try harder." I have, however, attempted to communicate
sometimes that for some (many) things there is no quick fix, and the long
term solution is a combination of seeking proper treatment and just
continuing to solider on as things slowly get better. I am trying to say,
"It may still really suck for a while, but there is now a light at the end
of the tunnel and you *are* going to make it through this with proper help
and support," and moms seem to respond with relief. I think maybe I will
add the explicit postscript that I am *not* telling her that she needs to
just try harder, just in case.
Thanks for bringing this up. It was a good exercise for me!
