ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Hi Charlie,
I don't have all the research on what the field is doing but I am sure it
would make a great wiki. What I do see a lot of is science center directors
who are trying to reinvent the model based less on themed exhibits and more
on being a community resource in the sense that they are trying to provide
real substantive value to their communities. For example the community
outreach programs Bryce is doing at PSC, the Center of Science that David
is working on at COSI, and the evening programs and hackathons that TIm and
Lath are doing at the Tech. I think there is great value in cool events
like maker's faires. We are working on these.

The research we have is in our article in this issue of Dimensions on
branding. Basically if you look at the recent census, the vast majority of
the population is outside the current target audience, and the group you
are not reaching, teens and adults above the age of 18, the majority of
them say there is nothing for them at science centers.

This means that the new models are less dependent on the one off visit for
their revenues and more dependent on building revenue through strong long
lasting relationships that would really support life long learning.
Nobodies really done this yet.
