Oh my gosh you absolutely have to talk to Holly Kerby at Madison Technical
College. She has an NSF grant for Fusion Science Theater and has developed
performances that are measurably effective at truly teaching chemistry
concepts with a blend of dramatic narrative and prediction of outcomes.

And you should see an Eric Mazur study of physics demos that shows that if
students predict outcomes of a demo they are something like 4 times more
likely to remember an accurate explanation of the concept, whereas without
the prediction component, the demos have no impact on learning over and
above the same lecture without a demo. Fascinating stuff.

I'm on vacation and can't get my hands on all of that right now but I'm
cc:ing Holly on this message. I'm cc:ing Jennifer Landry as well, head of
the Chemical Heritage Foundation, as they are doing neat stuff. (BCC's so I
don't blast the e-mails out there).

I'd love to see chemistry education broaden its horizons beyond flashes
and bangs, which don't convey the rich and varied nature of
chemistry-related endeavors.
