There has been more than one type of copper IUD. Currently used ones
around the world include Paragard, Gynefix, Multiload, Nova-T, etc. In
Australia the Multiload and Copper-T are in current use.

I'd be curious to read peer-reviewed articles about symptomatic copper
toxicity in otherwise healthy women that have been confirmed to be
caused by copper IUDs, if anyone has citations. What I can find in
reputable sources is data like this:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7398904
Fertil Steril. 1980 Jul;34(1):32-5.
Serum copper in long-term users of copper intrauterine devices.
Prema K, Lakshmi BA, Babu S.
"[...] Serial estimations in copper IUD wearers showed that there was no
alteration in serum copper levels for a period of up to 24 months. The
mean range and frequency distribution of serum copper levels in
long-term copper IUD wearers was similar to that seen in the normal
population. There was no difference in the mean 24-hour urinary copper
excretion between the control group and the copper IUD wearers.[...]"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2558561
Afr J Med Med Sci. 1989 Dec;18(4):295-9.
Serum copper levels in users of multiload intra-uterine contraceptive
devices.
Arowojolu AO, Otolorin EO, Ladipo OA.
"[...] There was no significant difference in the mean serum copper
levels estimated before and after 1 month of continuous use of the
device. Serial estimations of the serum copper levels in users showed
that there was no alteration in these levels after a period of 12 months
of continuous IUD use. We therefore conclude that the copper
incorporated into multiload IUDs appears not to influence the
concentration of serum copper of users. [...]"
