We live in a "control" & "perfectionist" culture. Breastfeeding does not fit that model. The value is placed on the ability to control all factors and then perfect it. The bottlefeeding/ ABM model fits the bill- parent controlled and the pitch that formula is scientifically made to meet the infants needs is easily accepted. The relationship derived through breastfeeding is dismissed as unnecessary or better yet detrimental because men can't experience that part - thus it can't be good. Women have been convinced of this themselves as they feel bad that their husband is left out of the feeding.
The fact that commercially there is money to be made is a whole other conversation.
