There is so much here to address here and I cannot possibly cover it all in this post, but there is a lot of research linking gluten intolerance with infertility, miscarriage and prematurity. If you have a sibling with celiac you have a 40% chance of having celiac yourself. Being born premature increases the risk of gut damage of course. Gut damage in the mother increases the risk of premature birth. This mother has every reason to be gluten-free. That doesn't even begin to address methylation issues and the risk of ingesting fortified grains to her baby. In the end, though, her history suggest a seriously damaged maternal gut and elimination is only the tip of the iceberg in gut healing.

Subject: Gluten/dairy avoidance during pregnancy - does it make a difference?
Hi,
A mom has been in touch with me with a question regarding diet in pregnancy
related to future lactation. She is currently 25 weeks pregnant and her previous
two children were both premature 28 weekers who went on to breastfeed for 2
years but with extreme issues related to food sensitivities. Mom was unable to
eat any gluten or dairy products. The first child ended up with celiac disease
and is now 5 years old. Obviously this mom is concerned that her next child will
be at high risk for similar food sensitivities.
Her question to me is - should she avoid all gluten and dairy for the remainder
of her pregnancy to possibly avoid similar problems? She isn't thrilled about
doing it, but will if there is evidence based info out there that this will make
a difference.
Interested if anyone knows the current thinking/research related to this, and
can point me in the right direction to counsel this mom.
Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
