I've been off of lactnet for the past 4 months and just caught a little of the discussions regarding the testing of donor human milk (DHM) and the question of comparison to the dairy or formula industries. There is no comparison. If you look at the pasteurized volumes involved in the dairy industry and the manufacturing of formula the costs is spread over a much larger volume. I don't know much about the dairy industry but I'm betting that the testing is done on 'vats' of milk.Pre-pasteurized testing is done on samples of 20-100 oz of each moms milk. Then there is post-pasteurization testing of each batch. The costs add up quickly on a much smaller volume.
