Vicki asks:
******************************************************
you must not be talking about America, Alla. I was a newborn nursery nurse
in the early 70's and and we supplemented the babies with Similac, I
believe it was, premixed and also glucose water. Not powder. When were the first
lactation consultants?
********************************************************
The first lactation consultants (known as that) were in the early '80's.
Chele Marmet and Ellen Shell's course in Encino CA, the UCLA program in LA
with Sandra Steffes and Kittie Frantz and Judi Lauwer's Breastfeeding
Support Consultant's home study course were among the very first programs out
there. The IBLCE exam and the first ILCA conference were both in 1985 at the
del Coronado in San Diego, though people were "certified" through their
courses before the IBLCE exam began. Pat Bull was the first lactation
consultant (so designated) in Illinois -- she had taken UCLA's first CLC (and
then it meant "certified lactation consultant" in 1982. She moved to IL and
started a private practice in 1983, where I joined her in early 1985.
That was back in the day when people were still saying, "a WHAT? Location
consultant? You work in real estate?"
