Breasts look identical but one breast is making no more
than drops of milk. She is supporting her infant on the functioning breast
with perhaps 4 oz formula daily. She was referred to me by her pcp just in
case this unilateral production indicated some pathology in the
non-functioning breast.

I had exatly the same thing with baby number 3. No milk from left breast,
though had plenty on both sides with first and second babies. Drops at most.
Ended up bf exclusively on right side, though nursed on left side, and when I
went back to work pumped religiously on that side as well. Nothing. Never
figured out what was wrong, except that I had a *mild* mastitis on the left side
with second child. Milk supply decreased after mastitis, but still continued to
feed on that side with her. Treated with Keflex, and it never returned. Not a
significant mastitis, but that is the ONLY thing we can think of. That was 28
years ago -- no pathology in that breast at all -- all normal mammograms, breast
exams, etc.

One of the perennial mysteries.
