~~~ Interesting thread. One thing that seems pretty common with babies with
tongue restriction issues is reflux. Limited tongue movement, even when
breastfeeding might (or might not) become functional weeks later without
frenotomy, often seems to be correlated with clinically significant reflux.
Even without overt speech issues, I've met parents of babies with tongue
restrictions, who seem to have their own, who have many other subtle issues(
especially people whose voices are their livelihood, people who sing
professionally, people who do oral presentations a lot at work.) I'm not sure if
the "tongue tie resolves" as much as growth, development, and bodywork, can
help a baby grow into someone whose tongue can work more functionally over
time. This is an important question, because asking a mom to wait almost two
months, assuring her that if she just pumps as much as would be needed,
bottlefeeds her baby( when she planned a breastfeeding relationship) is asking
a lot. IF we knew that if she "just" did that, it would work, is still
asking a lot. I have seen babies whose tongue restrictions were not noticed
until I saw them at 3 or 4 months, and those babies were not breastfeeding
well or comfortably and often had other issues I consider related as well.
Whether they needed a surgical release, or the release that can come from
bodywork, or both, they still needed something. And sometimes, rarely, all
that is done and they still don't breastfeed normally. It's a very humbling
topic, one of many that reminds me daily how much I still don't know...
Peace,
Judy
