I am hoping that someone can help me figure out if hindmilk/foremilk really exisits :-) I am working on a lactation course for the IBCLC exam next July. I am confused, because I have heard that the whole concept of hindmilk is a myth and yet, Breastfeeding and Human Lactation by Riordan states clearly that it exists.

I am wondering if someone can shed a light for me on what the "myth" is specifically. Is the myth related to the amount of time baby is on the breast? Is the myth about the fat content of the milk? Is the myth about the vocabulary of foremilk/hindmilk? And just who discovered this myth?

From my understanding, when we use breast compression to help stimulate baby, we are both pushing milk down the ducts as well as mixing in the fat a bit. If this is true, would a mom using breast compression not have as much of a difference in fore vs hindmilk, if such a thing exists?

Thank you!
Lisa Paul
