Does anyone have any experience with this situtaion? I recently
encountered a mother with a history (5+ years ago) of breast ca in one breast with
lumpectomy x2 and radiation. The other breast was unaffected. She was told
that she would not produce milk from that breast and had only been pumping
one breast. Baby is sick and in the NICU (and will be for a long time). Mom
has other risk factors for decreased supply.
I encouraged her to pump both breasts to see what she might get.

A mom with his history and I worked together last year. We met once before
the baby came so we could talk about the commonalities and the differences
between what might be her experience and what most mothers might
experience. When baby arrived, she elected not to pump the breast that had the all
the "events" happen to it. It had not changed in size or shape at all during
the pregnancy, so she felt it would not be useful. (I think if her affected
breast had shown any sign of responding to her pregnancy, she would have
done at least some early pumping to see what might happen.) She had a little
baby who had his own sucking issues, and ended up pumping and
supplementing as needed after he would breastfeed but not be satiated. Her one breast
produced plenty of milk and in time the baby's breastfeeding skills got
better. In her case, that one breast was plenty to make a nice breastfeeding
relationship for both of them. Hope that helps.
Peace,
Judy
