If it's a term baby with no risk factors such as smaller or larger than
average (SGA, LGA) or infant of diabetic mother at risk of hypoglycemia,
then have them remain skin to skin and they can wait til infant state is
quiet alert. If any risk factors or just mama gets worried her baby needs
to eat (which most mamas do worry), begin gentle hand expression of
colostrum and feed by spoon. I use plastic utensil spoons and try for 5
little puddles from each breast, spoonfeed to baby (puddle is just the
center of the spoon). This can be increased to 10 puddles etc as the day
wears on. Usually works. I would usually start around 4 to 6 hrs being very
low key and low tech about it, if for nothing but to jumpstart mother's
production.
