I had this discussion with an OB Attending at the hospital where I used to work (retired now).
He pointed to ACOG Policy and the study sited that proved there was no effect on milk supply by giving Depo before discharge.
So I pulled the study and read it. The proof of "no effect" was that the babies studied did not lose weight.
There was NO mention of exclusive breastfeeding anywhere in that study.
Based on that, I am assuming that all the babies in the study were getting mixed feeds to some degree or another.
Therefore - my conclusion - that concerned moms are not going to let their babies go hungry. If their baby is still hungry after breastfeeding, what is she going to do? Let baby cry? No. She will FEED THE BABY.
Therefore baby will not lose weight.
The issues of reduced milk production or of increased formula feeds were not addressed in the study.
The OB Attending was not impressed.

Gee, this one is a toss up: NICU baby's need for breast milk vs OB's need to
be sure mom won't get pg again too soon.
Unfortunately I think mom's wishes, when it is all explained (milk supply vs
possible pg) to her trumps OB's need. I just don't think it is OB's decision
to make. And I don't think OB needs to be one explaining all this to mom,
OB is kinda biased. PS: was this mom's pg unplanned? and in N.J. there are
places that give free or low cost contraceptives. Not sure about other
states, but worth checking out. Pat in SNJ
