Aaah, Holly, very interesting - we'll have to swap notes some day ....
But when you say BN positions (which I understand to be "laid-back"
nursing), having the baby semi-upright and held full-frontal against
the mom in the sling is not quite the same as lying back,
surely? That's the position I've never seen. But I have seen new
mothers taking infinite care to teach their babies how to latch,
leaned over them, and always supporting the breast in the scissors
manner - we always knew which new mothers had gone through the
baby-friendly hospitals because they wouldn't be using scissors, but cupping.

I grew up in Central Africa and I recall that the majority of the
women I observed in public were breastfeeding in very much a
"biological nurturing position" as most of them were being carried
'sling-style' on the mom's back and simply slung around to the front
where mom popped out a breast to nurse. The baby was in a full
frontal position and upright (or semi-upright) to mom who aften
continued to walk through the market or sit on the bus as she
breastfed. I don't recall any pillows or other supports, nor any
careful hand holds or football positions. :-)
