Sonya,
By all means look for the tongue tie but meanwhile:
1) Get mom laid-back a bit so baby is over the nipple and tongue comes down
2) Have mom support breast during feed (otherwise the baby feels like he's
eating a donut on a string - can't stabilize the breast so is chomping,
chewing or biting)
3) If mom's milk is in - babies will often do okay when there's flow, get
disorganized when it slows. Switch breasts - may need to do "three sides"
or "four sides"
These are all tricks we used when we didn't realize it was tongue ties we
were dealing with - often we called it "disorganized suck"!!
Dawn Kersula....who teaches moms these tricks in the hospital if the ENT
isn't around (small hospital!!)
