This is really interesting stuff - thanks, Jannette, Hilary, Jeanette and Jane! From what you're saying, it sounds as though it would *not* be feasible to manufacture human milk cheaply without cutting corners that most of us really wouldn't want to cut!
I'm also thinking there are issues around physical accessibility (i.e. getting it somewhere where mothers can get hold of it easily - corner grocery store, that kind of thing) that would also come down to the 'economy of scale' thing - the costs of getting stuff distributed are worthwhile when you're selling large amounts of that stuff, but not for small quantities unless it's very expensive.
