I just had the pleasure to hear KH Nyqvist speak at a conference, and
she gave this reference about the controversy of test weight:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20150780
Adv Neonatal Care. 2010 Feb;10(1):33-9. doi: 10.1097/ANC.0b013e3181cbf910.
Influence of test weighing before/after nursing on breastfeeding in
preterm infants.
Funkquist EL, Tuvemo T, Jonsson B, Serenius F, Nyqvist KH.
Perhaps it could be useful to the discussion.

> Hi,

> I am curious to know how many LCs on this list use test weights in the NICU as a means to determine infant's intake. Also, have any of you run into resistance to this practice like I have? We currently use a system in which an infant is supplemented based on the number of minutes at the breast, and often this system fails. This seems to cause infants to be supplemented with fortified milk too often, in my opinion.

> I have an opportunity to study this in my nursery with a $5000 mini grant from our evidence based practice department, but am looking for feedback from other NICUs first.
>
> If you do use test weighing, please clarify how often this is done - at every feeding? Once per day? Thanks.
