And some things are so easy to fix, I just scratch my head and go
"Da..." I mostly talk to myself in Russian.
I have a friend, Mom of 10, nursed baby #1 for 3 month, then was told
by a pediatric nurse to supplement, because the baby is "too small".
Both my friend and her DH are tiny people. Well you can all guess what
happened next. Within a month the baby was off the breast and on
formula. She did not even try with the next 8 kids.Well, then she met
me and my baby #7. She watched me nurse her and rarely she got sick
and I kept mentioning the cost of formula.
Well, she told me that nursing just did not work for her. She did not
have enough milk, it dried up after a few weeks, it did not have
enough calories... But the main issues were "my back hearts when I am
nursing" and "I can not use computer when I nurse" - the last one was
serious, since she lives on-line. Well, she decided to give nursing a
chance. And the baby was doing wonderful. I helped with moral support
and by giving her info about how little the baby needs to eat in the
first few days. How the changes in her breasts were normal and so on.
My DH pitched in by having a talk with her husband about the help and
support a nursing Mommy needs and how much better breastfeeding is for
the kids. Pointing out that he has certain obligations towards a
nursing wife did not heart a bit.
But her back was still in pain and the computer deprivation was
setting in. So I took a look at the way she nursed. And the problem
was obvious! She was nursing so hunched over her shoulders almost
touched her knees! Of course her back was on fire. She said this was
the only way she could nurse.
The solution was very easy too. A good nursing pillow. Case closed.
She loves her "baby tray" and now the back is OK and she has a free
hand for her laptop.
Wish someone would have noticed it before she has now 4 kids on
formula. But her youngest is two months old and exclusively breastfed!
