which begs the question WHY are we supplementing newborns.? Have been
digging thru the files. The best quote I found was from WHO, stating there
are very, very few acceptable reasons for supplementing the healthy full
term newborn. AAP says "exclusive." Marie Biancuzzo said at a conference in
2004 that supplementation is a cultural norm in US hospitals :-( How do we
change that? BFHI ? NJ just got first BFHI Hospital! BFHI has been out for
about 20 + years now. Why are there 19,000+ in the world and about 100 in
US? What does the rest of the world recognize that we don't?
Next question: if we really need to supplement, with WHAT? Expressed
colostrum is #1 choice.
Next question: Volume -how much does a newborn need?
Next question would be HOW to supplement.?
Just pondering..........Pat in SNJ
