Liz, and all, I am enjoying this discussion. I think that while this
author's intentions may be fine, the subject matter serves to fuel the fire
of the new mom who has no faith in her childbearing abilities after having
a medicalized birth, and then who has little to no faith in her body's
continuing abilities to produce and transfer adequate quantities of high
quality milk to her new baby. It adds to the frustration, the questioning,
and the lack of confidence that in my rather lengthy experience of nearly
30 years of helping moms, are the things that cause most moms to doubt
themselves and move away from what could have been the best part of being a
new mom, breastfeeding her baby. Medicalization, over analysis, and trying
to titrate breastmilk components when the baby is normal and healthy and
the mom is normal and healthy is like gilding the lily, and it fuels the
doubts that moms in our society are so plagued with. I would go with
whoever said a pat on the back, some good positioning help, and a hug, a
nap, and some good words is enough for most moms. An LC is not necessary
in most cases,... naturally not. But it's good we're here for those moms
whose confidence is shaken, and who are nervous nellies, often older first
time moms who are just not believing that everything will be ok. Designer
formula? feh. Designer breastmilk? Forgedaboutit.

Kathleen, off to enjoy the fourth with my newly married daughter, sil, and
rest of children, husband.
