Denise
I can't access the commentary - you need a subscription - but I did
find description at the Pediatrics website:
Lydia Furman, Early Limited Formula Is Not Ready for Prime Time,
Pediatrics peds.2013-0635; published ahead of print May 13, 2013,
doi:10.1542/peds.2013-0635,
Address correspondence to Lydia Furman, MD...Hospital, Cleveland,
Ohio infant feeding|breastfeeding|formulas (doi: 10.1542/peds.2013-0635)

I also found a previous article from Flaherty in 2011, setting the
scene as it were, see: Valerie J. Flaherman and Thomas B.
Newman, Regulatory Monitoring of Feeding During the Birth
Hospitalization, Pediatrics 2011;127;1177; originally published
online May 23, 2011; available at

Of interest, there is this FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE: The authors have
indicated they have no financial relationships relevant to this
article to disclose...
And there was also a reply by our own Susan Burger, and at the same
link a multi-authored, multi-organizational-endorsed reply both in
defence of exclusive breastfeeding in the immediate postpartum, see
Miriam Labbok, Kathleen A. Marinelli, Melissa Bartick, Gerald Calnen,
Lawrence M. Gartner, Ruth A. Lawrence, Joan Younger Meek, Jose J.
Gorrin-Peralta, Ana M. Parrilla-Rodriguez and Nancy G. Powers DOI:

Looks like we need some serious advocacy again! This furore is all
over the UK press too :-(

Denise wrote.............I'm not exactly sure which coauthor is
connected to the formula industry or how, but it was reported out by
both the LA times and The Huffington Post (not exactly primary
sources). It seems there is a commentary in this edition of
pediatrics by Dr. Lydia Furman that comments on it specifically
entitled "Formula not ready for prime time." I have tried going
through our hospital library to get a copy of the commentary and so
far have been unsuccessful.
Has anyone else been able to access it?
