I am a lactation intern at a hospital, and I have heard the LC's tell moms that babies are very sleepy in the first 24 hours and will nurse only a few times, and then wake up after 24 hours and nurse more on the second day. I have observed this to be the case. What I don't know is how many breastfeedings we expect in the first 24 hours. The LC I was with today said that she likes to see at least one feed in the first 8 hours, but she wasn't sure how many is a good number. Another one said, probably about 4-5 feeds.  Zero would be bad, and 8 would be amazing?  Where do we say, hm, let's get this baby fed some other way (finger feeding, try a shield, spoon, etc)?  Is there any kind of consensus on this?
