Remember this is new territory and the insurance companies and others
may need education. When a claim is denied (especially I am concerned
about families with sick and premature infants who need to rent a
hospital grade pump) the mother, LC, or doctor may have to request a
review of the claim by the medical supervisor. I cannot think of the
term that is used but maybe a case manager or medical reviewer. It can
be explained the difference between a pump that is made to continue
the supply of a working mom with a thriving bf infant vs a pump made
to initiate and sustain lactation for months or years when a mother is
pump dependent.
It may be that LCs, who help mothers obtain such pumps and coverage,
can write articles about how they were able to facilitate it, what
channels they went thru, what the appeal process was, etc. This would
help others as this process becomes more commonplace.
