I am having an issue w/ the Finnegan score for babies who are experiencing neonatal abstinence syndrome. One of the scores is as follows:
Sleeps less than 3 hours after feeding=1
Sleeps less than 2 hours after feeding=2
Sleeps less than 1 hours after feeding=3
As you can see, for the newborn exclusively breastfed infant, this would mean lots of scoring. This is distressing to mom (and LCs). I have brought this up with staff, but they feel since it's only one of the scores out of 19, that it wouldn't make a big difference in plan of care. Unfortunately, the moms do not feel that way...they, of course, are counting each and every point. Just looking for some feedback for those of you who are working w/ this population of moms and babies. Thanks,
Mary Foley RN IBCLC
