Hi, everyone.
As a midwife, I rarely have suggested this to a mom. However, when I have,
it has worked well.
I had a client, who had to be induced or augmented in hospital for her past
2 babies. She only needed the lowest amount of pitocin to get going and
stay in labour (never got above 4 mL/L). So for baby # 5, and postdates, I
suggested pumping to her. The day she went into labour, she pumped 3 times
which got her contracting a bit then had a great, ummm, oxytocin rush from
her partner (haha) which kicked her contractions into high gear, and stayed
until she had her baby.
Her sisters were the same way when induced or augmented - only needed the
lowest doses of pitocin. I wouldn't make a habit of recommending it (how
often, for how long) - but knowing this family through a total of 8
pregnancies, I believed it would work. And it did, thank goodness.
Happy Hanukkah to all who will be celebrating this next week. May you find
peace and strength as you gather with your families and friends.
