Did you all receive your newsletter from IBLCE? I particularly liked the
article about certificat**ion** vs. certificat**es**. Those last few
letters make a whopping difference to those of who us hold (and renew) our
IBCLC certification, and find we must explain to members of the public
(mothers, administrators, policy makers) the differences in "alphabet soup"
designations for those who work with breastfeeding families. Scroll down
past the equally-interesting interview with Mayim Bialik to see the
article. http://www.iblce.org/news-from-the-board/enewsletter-volume1-issue2#Certification
vs. Certificate

Add this to the free download position paper from ILCA re: the Role and
Impact of the IBCLC, available in English, Spanish, Croatian and Japanese
at http://www.ilca.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3832, and you have a
pretty good slam-dunk explaining that IBCLC certification: (a) takes
*years* of didactic and clinical training to acquire (b) *scores* of hours
of continuing education and/or test-taking to maintain (c) has an ethical
code (the new IBLCE CPC), and procedures for disciplinary action, to back
up its protection of the public's health, safety and welfare, and (d)
allows one to be defined as an "allied healthcare provider" without having
other licenses or education, and thus eligible for professional liability
(malpractice) insurance (which NO healthcare provider should practice
without, esp. in the USA).
