I want to see that avatar do a suck assessment, evaluate a posterior tongue-tie, auscultate for swallowing, assess a palate, evaluate the degree of edema, evaluate the degree of nipple damage, teach a mother how to do RPS or hand-express, etc. These and more skills differentiate between a breastfeeding cheerleader and a consultant. Maybe they're thinking like a financial consultant? Maybe what we should call real lactation consultants is lactation "therapist"?

Subject: avatars, lactation consultants of the future?

Dear Lactnet Friends:

Good grief, how will this work???? I always learn better with a live person than by reading a manual. I find this line of research personally disturbing.

"On March 9, 2012, Northeastern University released results of a small study<http://www.northeastern.edu/news/stories/2012/03/edwards_bickmore.html>,
which they helped to fund, regarding avatars and breastfeeding education.
Roger Edwards of the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and Tim Bickmore, of the College of Computer and Information Science have recently developed a computerized lactation education consultant to support and inform expecting mothers about breastfeeding. Bickmore has also developed similar systems for use in walking-promotion studies, oncology clinical trials and patient adherence programs. The lactation avatar was created with close attention to a real life lactation consultant, including her body language and hand gestures. A 15 person pilot study was conducted with the lactation consultant avatar. The study found that use of this avatar as a learning medium significantly increased intent to breastfeed and knowledge surrounding breastfeeding. A larger study is underway to determine if a lactation avatar can influence breastfeeding duration."
