Wow, Pamela, what wonderful resource! I work with mothers who breastfeed into 3-4-5th year. We estimated that 1.5-2 year old children take in 1-2L of breastmilk a day based on how much urine they secrete, comparison of rate of gulping at the breast vs. cup, etc. Current descriptions of breastfeeding past 6 months do not reflect how important breastfeeding is for 1-3 year-olds and how substantial breastmilk intake is in this group of children. This is the case not only for developing world. I work with primarily well-educated and affluent mothers in the countries of the former USSR. In the presence and abundance of all kinds of food, children between 1-2 years of age rely mostly on breastmilk for nutrition, unless they are forcefully weaned or forcefully fed other foods. Given a choice, they prefer nursing at the breast.
I will distribute this report among the mothers I work with. What a wonderful forgotten resource! I will also check in any of the materials on ORT refer to this document.
