Dear Lactnet Friends:
"Because the reality is that many babies, for whatever reason, are going to
be fed either completely or partially on formula ...."
If we who are the world's breastfeeding guides and therapists, espouse the
belief that formula is ubiquitous, breastfeeding can not advance.
The evidence is overwhelming that there is no way any factory or any
chemist, can concoct a replacement for human milk that won't make babies
sick or kill them. The nonhuman milk substitute can keep a baby alive, but
at a cost..
The answers to infant feeding have been known for centuries; the WHO has
codified them. Human milk: from the mother, from a wet nurse, from a donor
milk bank, from informal and sensible milk sharing. Why should any baby be
sent on the road to poor health, even when the mother won't or can't
breastfeed?
We need milk banks in every hospital with a NICU, informal networks in
every City....why put so much effort into making a substitute that makes
babies sick and pollutes?
Forget about it.
My dream is that formula would disappear, because there are enough mothers
in the world to provide milk for every baby.
warmly,
